Change is Reel Film Labs will open doors in the film industry for Black and Brown girls in Metro Detroit by putting cameras in their hands to provide a lens for them to see the beauty in themselves and their community. Our film/media/leadership program is for girls of color between 13 and 18 years old who live in Metro Detroit. We provide a joyful and healing space for our participants to stay connected, learn about resources, and gain tools to thrive during this powerful moment in history. Spaces are limited.

BLACK GIRLS RISING

Change is Reel girls will write, facilitate, and produce an online review show analyzing the representation of Black and Brown girls and women in film, television, music videos, and animation. Streamed on multiple social media platforms.

Change is Reel utilizes multimedia as a tool for Black and Brown girls to tell their own stories and shift the narratives that impact their lives. This year we are focusing on The CROWN Act and End the Pushout Act to motivate our girls to have agency over their lives by actively working towards solutions. We aim to educate our community and garner support.

PASS THE CROWN ACT

Our CROWNED events aim to educate our community and garner support for House Bill 4275, the Michigan CROWN Act.

In the state of Michigan, it is legal to discriminate against people of African descent who wear their hair naturally.

Students face unfair punishment for not following the school dress code for wearing
natural hairstyles. Some students are denied full participation in sports and other activities for embracing the hair that grows out of their heads. Schools across the country deny male and female students, who wear their hair
naturally, the right to walk across the stage during their high school graduation.

PASS THE 'END THE PUSHOUT ACT'

Detroit Women of Color, Inc. was honored to be chosen for the Detroit premiere
of the award-winning film “PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in
Schools.” The film by Monique Morris and Jacoba Atlas is based on the power
book PUSHOUT by Dr. Morris. We examined adultification plays a key role in the
mental, sexual, and emotional violence against Black girls is justified or ignored.
We discussed our own views of Black girls and audience members shared how this
negative perception of Black girls has impacted their lives and ways we are

Change is Reel will continue these conversations about the adultification and discrimination against Black girls in schools.

Community Engagement

FILM SCREENINGS

We will continue to host the Detroit Women of Color International Film Festival, community film screenings, and film/media workshops in Metro Detroit featuring films by or about Black, Brown, and Indigenous girls and women.

Ida B. Wells: A Passion for Justice (American Experience), written and directed by William Greaves. Ida B. Wells (1862 - 1931) was an African-American journalist and crusader for African-American rights and civil rights for women. She deserves a full-length documentary about her amazing life.

Detroit Women of Color, Inc hosted a special screening/fundraiser of Wakanda Forever at Emagine Theater in Royal Oak. Young people and their families throughout Metro Detroit attended.
